Pet Safety on San Diego Living

Today I was on the CW San Diego Living talking about pet safety. – click here to see the video segment

This is such an important aspect to think about, in particular when you are traveling with your dogs.  There are several products that I use and recommend when it comes to pet safety when traveling.  Here are some of my favorites.

First and foremost, I will NOT travel unless my dogs are restrained for both my safety and theirs.  There is no better crate than the MiM Vario Cage.  I have one in my car and recommend if you’re as concerned about your pets safety to get one for yours.  The come in every size to fit just about every car.  These crates are engineered for safety and made in Sweden.  They are the only crash tested crate with a crumple zone feature and emergency escape hatch.

I strongly encourage you to give your dog a toy or something to keep them busy when you are traveling, if not they may just drive you and themselves crazy.  I love the old Kong standby.  I’ve talked it about the Kong a hundred times.  I keep a large on in my dogs crate stuffed with almond butter. Your dogs safety is important when they get out of the car.  Slip leads are the safest way to prevent your dog from slipping away.  Flat collars just don’t protect your dog.  I like the Mendota slip leads.  They are a great quality product made in the USA.  I use them in my shelter work as well as my private practice and on my own dogs.  They are the best I’ve found.

If you have an older pet or are concerned about your pets joints, I recommend using a ramp for your dog to get in an out of the car.  I’ve used the plastic ramps from the big box pet stores, but I’ve only used them once or twice.  Then they get set aside in the garage and never used again.  This Aluminum dog ramp is the best I’ve found.  It will support even the largest dog (up to 180 lbs) and is easy to use, nice looking and well made.

I also love the Nite Ize LED lights.  I put one on my dog’s collar at night and it gives me peace of mine that I can see him even if I might drop the leash or he wanders into the bushes.  I’ve used these for years and they work great.  If you’re in California, these are also available at REI.

Besides the Kong, my favorite chew toy for my dog is the GoNuts. These are made in the USA and the best quality.  They come with a guarantee if your dog should ever chew through it, you can’t beat that.  They come in various sizes and shapes and will occupy even the toughest chewers.   Remember to always get the largest size toys for your dogs to prevent them from swallowing the toy or choking.
